The family is a group of people who are related by marriage, blood and nurturing relationships, they live
together, have a budget together to satisfy the basic needs of the family ’s members.
A household is a social unit consisting of one or a group of people living together (sharing a household)
and eating together, having a common budget and living a long life.
The family function speaks to the way in which family life is expressed in association with the needs of
the society for t he family and the needs of the individual for the family. It just reflects the two -way
relationship, between the family and its members and between the needs of society for family
institutions.
Modern families are families in an industrialized and moderniz ed society with a variety of structures and
specialized functions. Family relationships are based on freedom and equality .
Family change is the process of changing from one family form to another, characterized by changes in
family structure and function.
– Function of the family
1) Function to reproduce and reproduce humans. People are the center, the goal and the motivation of
development. The implementation of this function of the family aims to create future generations, meet
and satisfy the needs of th e family members, and it also responds to the rise and development of society
.
2) Economic function: This is a relatively important function in Vietnamese families. The family performs
this function to ensure the living and eating needs of family members. At the same time, the family is
also a grassroots economic unit promoting the development of production, distribution and circulation
of goods for the society.
3) Socialization function. The family is considered the first environment to help children part icipate in
the process of socialization, where shaping personality and social standard behaviors. From this first
environment, the personality of the child is gradually improved, contributing to the training of citizens
who have qualities and benefits for society.
4) Function to satisfy psychological and emotional needs. The family is considered a home where family
members are assured of a balanced mind, satisfying emotional needs. This is also an important factor to
strengthen the sustainability of marriag e and family, social stability.
According to Parson, in modern society, families no longer perform many of the same functions as
before but assign other evolutionary institutions (schools, hospitals, churches, kindergartens …). The
family loses many func tions and almost becomes no longer functional. However, this is only true in
Western society with significant changes in other basic conditions. Meanwhile Eastern society is bound

by many traditional social and ethical social relations. Parson has proven t o her judgment that individual
members of the family participate in all of these functions but as individuals rather than as family
members. This is completely different from the Eastern society, where the role of clan and family in
Vietnamese society main tains the traditional values and functions that are traditional by cultural and
economic structure. Tradition has not been broken. Therefore, Vietnamese families attach to the
traditional cultural values of the nation. Every feeding, behavior and behav ior of people in a family
comes from the cultural roots of Vietnamese people. The relationship between people in a family is
always dominated by kinship, village and national relations.
Thus, the function structure view considers family as an intermediary unit, a bridge between family and
society. Family is both a place to meet the material and basic needs for individuals, and the family also
contributes to ensuring the existence of society. Under the impact of industrialization and
modernization, the famil y structure changes, which in turn leads to a change in family functions
following a narrowing trend. Parsons also said that in the family there is a gender division, whereby men
and women play different roles in the family, but all aim to ensure the devel opment of the family. The
two roles of this gender complement each other, there is no contradiction or conflict.
Apply functional structure theory to the study of family function change to see that the family is a basic
social unit and has certain function s to meet the needs of society. The family is also an intermediary
between individuals and society, so families are an important part of the social system. When the family
function changes, it not only affects individuals in the family, but also affects th e entire social system; on
the contrary, the transformation of social conditions is an important factor that transforms family
functions. It can be said that this approach helps us identify the function of the family in social life and
explain the transfor mation of family functions is inevitable. Although we cannot deny that some
functions of the family have changed before the change of socio -economic conditions, families still play
an im portant role in the socialization of fish. multiplying and stabilizing human personality.
