From the beginning of the industrial revolution the development and use of technology has
become a major part in the evolution of humanity. Although the develop ment of new technologies
improved the man's life it also had its drawbacks, acting as a double edge sword. M edicine improved but
also created new complication in treating patients. It made our cars m ore easy to drive, but at the same
time made us more dependent on the systems rather than our abilities to drive. New automated
factories pump out products at faster rates than humans ever could.
Medical Domain
In the medical field the evolution of procedures and the devices used evolves constantly. Using
new technologies new ways of curing illness appeared as older practices became obsolete.
For example using the discoveries in material science manufacturing processes and teratology
medical engineers devised new implants that help people that suffer from arthritis to replace damaged
parts of bones or the even the cartilaginous disks between the spine vertebrae.
Another use of technology in the medical field is the new medical equipment that hav e the
same finesse in their movement as a surgeon these devices can be remote controlled by a trained
person to perform com plex operations that require more precision than a normal surgeon can obtain
using his hands. This device als o helps because the medic controlling it can be in any hospital around the
world and control the medical apparatus via the internet .
While these new devices and procedure were designed to help the patience they may create
other complications that could affect the wellbeing of the patients.
For example the medical staff can never know surely how the patient will respond to the applied
treatments. The medical equipment can alway s have errors of calibration, software or even the
personnel could be poorly trained to use it.
In the case of the remote control equipment just something as simple as a internet connection
loss in a cri tical moment can kill a patient. The new implants can be rejected by the body etc .
Automotiv e area
Adaptive Cruise Control – is an optional cruise control system for road vehicles that automatically
adjusts the vehicle speed to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead.
-Pros: Doesn’ t get the driver very tired as in conventional constant speed -keeping m ethod
Better fuel efficiency due to the fact that the car keeps an absolute constant speed
Self maintains a constant distance from the car in front
-Cons: The system might fail and the throttle may be stuck wide open
Due to the lack of interaction with the car controls the driver may become distracted and
lose focus
Start & Stop System – is a system that automatically shuts down and restarts the internal
combustion engine to reduce th e amount of time the engine spends idling .
-Pros: People spend less money on fuel and on the maintenance of the mechanical parts of the
engine
Lower emissions
-Cons: While the system increases fuel efficiency and les wear on the mechanical parts the starter
and alternator are affected
Not efficient of the engine is shut down for less than 30 seconds
GPS Navigation – Global Positioning System using satellites
-Pros: GPS units provide you with a simple way of getting to your location
GPS devices make navigation easier and provide a bearing and distance to a preset location
In addition to GPS navigation, many units include such functions as barometric altimeters,
an electronic compass, and time and date, allowing you to roll several devices into one
-Cons: The driver may become too dependent on the system and a failure of the system may
lead to an accident
The system may not be user friendly to all classes of drivers making it redundant.
Factories automation
The digitization and automati on of millions of jobs emerge as an inevitable trend due to the
large number of benefits that gives us the use of new technologies w ithin the world of manufacturing.
And this process has already claimed multiple "victims" , that is, institutions, factories and agencies that
are not able to adapt to the guidelines of the new scenario. And among these "victims" may consider
the loss of many businesses and jobs that are no longer useful or necessary.
Between the main advantages of replacing human work by technology in several jobs as in
factories we can find:
– Optimization , a machine is made to have more efficiency than a human.
– Productivity , machines are usually faster than humans in a same job station .
– Relian ce, machines don’t get ill or have bad moods .
On the other hand , in order to obtain good results of the use of technology it is necessary to
solve the requires of them:
– Great investment , new technologies are often quite expensive and they are not affordabl e for
every business.
– Maintenance , they have to be check periodically and sometimes need to be repaired, that can
lead to large losses of money for the company.
– But t he greatest difficulty we have to solve in order to fully introduce technology into jobs i s
the destruction of jobs . This is because increasingly there are more new technologies that can
replace jobs and therefore there is more people that claim for work. It can lead into a big
problem in the near future,
To conclude we mus t state that technology development must be done wisely and must always
involve the human factor.
