Supply Chain Management of Malaga wine with an approach to tourism

Background: the field of interest is tourism and wine in Malaga. Malaga in the Andalucian
province of Spain is famed for sun, sea and sand but what many people do not know is that it
is also one of the oldest wine making regions in Spain. They were known as “mountain
wine’’ , Malaga wine is a unique sweet wine. The process of making Malaga win e is using
grapes very high in sugar content, they are roasted under the sun than pressed to reduce
moisture and concentrate the sugar. This wine in this region is actually dark in colour despite
using white grapes. They make 5 types of wine. Malaga wine i s also a tourist attraction,
tourist come here and enjoy tasting tours. . In Malaga are two famous tapas bar were wine
tasting can be done. Bar Pimpi is the place to be in Malaga. A visit to a bodega in this
beautiful and emblematic city is a must for any traveller or tourist. They form the route of a
pilgrimage for tourists who enjoy the great pleasures of wine, occupying an important place
in Costa del Sol tourism.
Malaga is a sweet fortified wine originating in the Spanish city of Málaga made from Pedro
Ximénez and Moscatel grapes. The center of Malaga production is Sierra de Almijara, along
with Antequera, Archidona, San Pedro Alcantara, Velez Malaga and Competa. The
winemaking history in Malaga and the nearby mountains is one of the oldest in Europe.
However, like many of the world’s great dessert wines, demand fell dramatically in the 20th
century and it was feared that this wine would soon become extinct. There has been a recent
surge in interest in sweet wines, and Malaga wines are finding their plac e on the world
stage. There are many red and white varietals grown, but the only ones used for dessert wines
are the Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel.

Research aims and objectives: My expectations from this paper are to find out Malaga’s
production of wine, thei r supply chain management, logistics, if they supply for other
countries and also how this impacts tourism. I wish to explore this topic in better detail
because is the region that I am going for my Erasmus year. I am interested in the wine
process, suppl y chain management of wine and its impact on tourism. I hope to find out more
about their famous wine tasting tours, their production and sales. Comparing the supply chain
management of the wine production from Malaga with Irelands wine production ‘’In the past
few years there has been a huge structural change in how wine is delivered to those who
drink it.’’ The logistic behind their supply chain is very complex and I would like to discover
the rights and wrongs in the supply chain management. Also importa nt information can be
found in internet and books.
Current Goals:
 Make a note of all of Malaga famous wines, the specific bars that the wine is found
 Find academic articles to get appropriate information
 Speak to the company staff and prepare the inter view questions
 Prepare a survey that I will conduct on the street, try to find out how many people
know about the Malaga wine and his influence on tourism

 Find out as many information possible about the Supply Chain Management of the
wine and about the c ompany that I will interview.

Theory: Academic articles, website, Google scholar, E -books ,books, an interview with the
CEO and also employees to find out more information on the actual wine production and
management approaches.
I will use Google schola r to find academic articles:
Concentración e impacto estacional del turismo de cruceros en Málaga/Seasonal impact and
concentration of cruise tourism in Malaga.
Interview with the manager in charge and staff members of the company.
Books and internet woul d be another source of information for my project.
Create a survey and conduct it on the street and in University.

Methodology: in order to find out the relevant information my main source would be from
an interview with the CEO or the manager in char ge. The staff of the company is one of the
best sources as they develop their supply chain management and the logistic behind it. As
they have to work with it day to day it becomes part of their life and would be suitable and
relevant information for my pr oject. An interview and a close look to information about the
company will provide me with trustworthy and applicable information.
Before the discussion I would already have information on the company and at the interview
I will try to find out more detai ls on the company itself. It is vital to make the research on the
company beforehand. How they are a successful and influential business and how they relate
and are part of tourism. What makes their wine attract tourists and how they control the
business.
Mock survey:
Question 1: Do you know Malaga wine?
Question 2: In your opinion, why is Malaga wine famous?
Question 3:: Do you know the famous bars where Malaga wine is found? If yes please state.
Question 4: Do you think tourism have an impact on Malaga wine?
Question 5: Do you think for Malaga is easy to trade and export their wine?

Research tools:
I will be using books, as here in Malaga I have a variety of books in the University library. I
will take advantage of the materials and books that are relevant to my project and try and
gather all the information for a more in depth research. I also plan to use E -books as they are
available on DIT library website. In my visit to Dublin I can access the library for books and
conduct my research.
I will use Google Scholar to find academic articles about tourism and supply chain
management of Malaga wine. Even thought the articles found, the interview and the survey
would be in Spanish as is the main language for my studies abroad I should have no problem
in translate them to English.
For data collection I will try to make an interview in Dublin as well, as I will compare the
supply chain management of Malaga wine with Irelands. I will conduct the in terview, record
it and take notes.

How I plan to analyse the information:
I will be using charts and graphs to store the information and then used it for the project
itself.
Always start with your research goals:
When analysing data (whether from ques tionnaires, interviews, focus groups, survey or
whatever),I will start from the review of my research goals, i.e., the reason i undertook the
research in the first place. I will organize the data in chronological order.
Basic analysis of "quantitative" in formation:
Make copies of my data and store the master copy away. Use the copy for making edits,
cutting and pasting.
I will tabulate the information, i.e., add up the number of ratings, rankings, yes's, no's for
each question.
For ratings and rankings , I consider computing a mean, or average, for each question.
Basic analysis of "qualitative" information:
Read through all the data.
Organize comments into similar categories.
Label the categories or themes.
Attempt to identify patterns, or associations and causal relationships in the theme.

Interpreting information:
Attempt to put the information in perspective, I will compare results to what i expected,
promised results; management or program staff; any common standards for my chosen
products or servi ces; original goals. indications or measures of accomplishing outcomes or
results.
Record conclusions and recommendations in a report, and associate interpretations to justify
my conclusions or recommendations.
