PLOS utilizes a fiber optic network that connects all branches to the central data center located at Hoyt
Library. PLOS partners with Saginaw Public Schools (SPS) to facilitate the interconnection of all branch
libraries utilizing the existing SPS fiber network.

All data and voice service s originate at Hoyt library and are distributed to branch locations via fiber optic
network. The entire network fabric is provided by Cisco equipment. Internet services are provided by

Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) in conjunction with SPS. AT&T is the PRI ( Primary Rate Interface )
provider for telecommunication services.

Data Backup

Current backup solution is provided by Symantec Backup Exec and utilizes LTO3 tapes for nightly full
backups. Backup tapes are stored in IT fire safe. Backup tapes are rotated and each tape is only written to
once per month and twelve times per annum. The current backup solution is in the process of being replaced
with a hard drive based appliance solution. The estimated completion date is still undetermined but, is
scheduled to be completed no later than 30 June 2014.

PLOS Network Equipment

The Hoyt data center provides enterprise wide services:
1. Internet G ateway (Cisco ASA)
2. DNS
3. Active Directory (Parent Domain)
4. Email (Microsoft Exchange)
5. Cisco Unified Communication/Unity
6. DHCP services for wireless internet
7. Accounting services (FundBalance)
8. Backup services (Symantec Backup Exec)
9. Web Filtering (WebSense)
10. Spam filtering (Barracuda)
11. Antivirus (Symantec Endpoint)

Each branch of PLOS contains a server that p rovides the following services:
1. Active Directory (Child Domain)
2. Public Computer Time/Print Management (EnvisionWare)
3. DHCP

Each of the five branch libraries contain the following network equipment:
1. Data switch
2. VOIP specific switch
3. Voice Gateway
4. Domain server

IP Addresses

The PLOS network uses 10.1.0.0/16 addresses for internal networking. The following are the IP pools that
are used by the PLOS network.

Public IP range as provided by SVSU:
155.138.6.114 – 155.138.6.126
Gateway: 155.138.6.113
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.240

Computer Triage
The following is a list of essential services starting with the most important:
1. Network (both internal and external data/voice)
2. Servers
3. Service desk computers (reference & circulation)
4. Public computers
5. Guest wireless

Guidelines for computer triage:
1. Visually assess computer for possible damage. For example, look for signs of water in a flooding
situation.
2. Move computers to a safe and secure loc ation for further assessment.
3. After computers are moved to safe and secure location, test all computer equipment for operability. In
case of water related disaster, open computer and inspect for signs of water penetration. If there are
any signs of water penetration do not power on the computer.
4. If the computer is deemed inoperable, immediately remove the hard drive and label it.

Potential Disaster Probability Rating Impact Rating Brief Description Of Potential Consequences
& Remedial Actions
Flood 3 4 All critical equipment is located 24” off the
floor
Fire 3 4 Backup tapes and important documents are
maintained in a fire safe.
Tornado 5
Electrical storms 5
Act of terrorism 5

Act of sabotage /theft
3 Physical security is maintained on all
servers and network equipment. Data is
backed up nightly.

Electrical power failure
3
4 All critical equipment is attached to
separate UPS’s as well as corresponding
electrical circuits attached to auto standby
generator.
Loss of communications network services 4 4 Voice network is configured to use phone
circuit located in each building.
Probability: 1=Very High, 5=Very Low Impact: 1=Total destruction, 5=Minor annoyance
