Hans Christian Andersen, was a Danish author and is best remembered for his
fairy tales. Some of his most famous fairy tales include “The Emperor’s New
Clothes”, “The Little Mermaid” , “The Nightingale” , “The Snow Queen” , “The
Ugly Duckling” , “The Little Match Girl” , “Thumbelina” (Wikipedia).
“The Emperor’s New Clothes” is a short tale written by Hans Christian
Andersen. This story was first published with “The Little Mermaid” in Copenhagen,
on 7 april 1837 (Wikipedia).
This story is by an emperor who like very much a new clothes. He spent all his
money to obtain this clothes and his only ambition was to be always well dressed.
This emperor did not care for his country and for his soldiers, he didn’t made
anything, only he liked to go out and to show a new suit of clothes. One day, two
swindlers came to this country and they made people believe that they were weavers.
They declared that the material of their clothes has the wonderful quality of being
invisible and that only the smart people see the clothes.
The Emperor, being very excited, gave many bags of gold to weavers, to make his
famous clothes. When he put on his new clothes, the Emperor saw nothing but said
nothing. He went out that way and the people were lying, saying that these are
beautiful clothes. One child said that the Emperor is not dressed and then all people
started to laugh. The Emperor realized he was lying and he continued to go that way
and the two weavers run away with the money.
“The Emperor’s New Clothes”” is a story for the society we live in. Andersen
show us fake but he trusts in the words of a child telling the truth : “The Emperor’s
clothes do not exist”.
Naomi Wood of Kansas State University concludes : “Perhaps the truth of “The
Emperor’s New Clothes” is not that the child’s truth is mercifully free of adult
corruption, but that is recognizes the terrifying possibility that whatever words we
may use to clothe our fears, the fabric cannot protect us from them.
