HEBREWS 6:13-19 (NLT) // PSALM 42:5
An unshakable faith. This is what we hunger for: Go d’s undeniable strength blowing like a
victorious banner over our fragile lives. But how d o we remain steadfast when heartache
strikes its iron fist into our lungs, leaving us lim ping and gasping for breath?
Abraham had crushing disappointment to deal with: h e was old and childless. Yet one
day God told him that he would have ‘many descendan ts’. To confirm this seemingly
impossible promise, God swore by Himself, since the re was no higher name or authority to
take an oath by. In doing so, God shows us that we, like Abraham, can anchor our hope
in both his Word and his Name. This hope takes us b eyond the sinking sands of our present
reality into the unchangeable and unshakable presen ce of God!
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were sentenced to a blazing furnace because
they refused to bow down to a golden image (Daniel 3:17-18). Believing that God was
able to save them, they proclaimed that EVEN IF he chose not to, still, they would remain
standing. They trusted in the will of God REGARDLES S of the outcome. So how do we, like
our three friends, remain anchored in him, be it in success or defeat?
The Psalmist paints a poetic picture of how our hea rt can remain unmoved in the night
season: he commands his downcast soul to hope in God (Psalm 42:5). He shuts up fearful
voices by blessing and praising God’s name wholehea rtedly. Just like him, we can lift our
thinking by educating our soul, reminding it of wha t it truly knows: Your Name is higher!
Your Word, unfailing!
