Heteropolynuclear coordination compounds * have gained a lot of interest in the last decades,
especially as precursors for metal oxide systems composed of micro – and nanoparticles . In particular,
the magnesium –aluminum and strontium –aluminum polyoxalates are convenient precursor s for the
MgAl 2O4 and, respectively, SrAl 2O4 spinel s. We present the synthesis and physical -chemical
properties of such complex compounds , as well as the possibility of using them for the preparation of
pure or lanthanide -doped spinels. The nanocomposites obtained after incorporation of the latter in a
polymeric matrix could serve as potential visualizers of UV radiation with specific wavelengths in a
dark environment.
