What is discourse community?
Discourse community identifies the social groups for which the majority of
writing tasks are conducted.
Swales (1990) established six criteria to define functional discourse
communities:
A set of shared goals
“Mechanisms of intercommunication” that allow…
…The exchange of information and feedback
Some common genres which the community uses and defines
A particular lexicon, and
Specific requirements for membership

Beaufort’s DCK Framework for
Writing Expertise

Applying the DCK Framework
to Assignment Design
Discourse Community Knowledge = situated
assignment
Genre knowledge = “What you’ll write”
Subject -Matter Knowledge = “What you’ll write
about”
Rhetorical Knowledge = “Who you’ll write for
(and why)”
Process Knowledge = “How you’ll write”

What is writing self -efficacy?
Self-Efficacy: People’s beliefs about their own
capabilities; those beliefs influence “how people feel,
think, motivate themselves, and behave” (Bandura,
1994).
Writing Self -Efficacy:
Low: “a fearful writing approach devoid of strategies and
based on doubting skills and seeing writing as a slow and
painful process.”
High: “more likely to vary or alternate strategies and to use
the right strategy…for the particular task” (Lavelle, 2009).
General WSE versus Task -Specific WSE

Effects of DCK on WSE
Preliminary/Anecdotal
Students better grasp complex writing tasks
Students make fewer off -base false starts
Faculty experience less frustration with student: [anonimizat]
Under investigation
Does use of the DCK framework increase students’
general WSE?
Does use of the DCK framework increase students’ task –
specific WSE?
Does “burdening” students with explicit knowledge of
DCK interfere with WSE?
