Abstract : Coordination compounds and oxidic systems have found numerous applications in both
chemical and pha rmaceutical technologies. Especially when used in biomedical fields, the identity and
purity of their precursors are of utmost importance for the properties of the final product. Also, when
optical properties, like fluorescence, are to be determined, an ex act atomic concentration of dopant in
the oxidic system is a compulsory requ irement. We thus propose a fast, precise and reliable method
for the quantification of water con tent in precursors which possess metal ions in their structure. This
method can be e asily extended to include pharmaceutical substances for which some data about their
thermal decomposition is available.

Abstract : Heteropolynuclear coordination compounds have gained a lot of interest in the last decades,
because of their pure scientific value , as well as their important technical properties, by themselves or
as precursors for advanced oxidic systems. In particular , the magnesium -aluminium polyoxalate is a
convenient precursor for the MgAl2O4 spinel. We present here the synthesis and physical -chemical
properties of Mg -Al polyoxalate, as well as the possibility of using it for the preparation of pure or
doped spinels . The later can find various applications, for example as visualizers of UV radiation in
facilities that use such wavelengt hs, like biom edical laboratories or pharmaceutical storage units.

Abstract : Mixed oxides, obtai ned by thermal decomposition of organo metallic precursors, can find
applications in various fields. For example, lanthanide -doped spinels can be used for visualization of
specific UV radiation. We describe the preparation of such materials and their optical properties,
including the fluorescent behavio r. After incorporation in a polymeric matrix, the obtained oxide
powder s can serve as potent ial visualizer s of UV radia tion with specific wavelength s in a dark
environment .
