The Henri Rieben Scholarship Status1
Objectives :
Established by the Jean Monnet Foundation for Europe, the Henri Rieben Scholarship targets
the following objectives :
Providing support for research projects in various scientific disciplines related to
European integration , including for instance ideas and actions pioneered by Jean
Monnet and other protagonists, the idea of a united Europe, the history, the evolution
and process issues of European construction, or relat ions between Switzerland and
Europe;
Promoting consultation and exploitation of archives kept at the Foundation, which
equally cover the first half of the twentieth century and other European issues;
Developing an international Alumni network of the sc holarship.
Eligibility Requirements
Beneficiaries must meet the following criteria:
Be PhD candidat: [anonimizat];
Conduct a r esearch focusing on European integration;
Present a resear ch project aimed at fulfilling the above -mentioned Henri Rieben
scholarship objectives;

Be at an advanced doctoral stage, i.e. they must have sufficiently defined research
topic s and problem s. Research topic s shall be approved by applicants’ home
universities;
Be recomm ended by their thesis directors;
Achieve proficiency in French language comprehension (passive knowledge required).
Duration of the Program
The scholarship is granted for 1 month at least and 3 months at most, a term that
cannot be renewed within the same academic year ;
One or many doctoral students can be given the allocation thr oughout a given
academic year.
Scholarship Competition
The grant competition shall be launched each year through a call for applications, and the
selection process shall be organized by the Foundation itself.
Application
The following are required as part of the application file in French or English:
A motivation letter specifying duration as well as desired dates for a stay in Lausanne ;
A resume and possibly, a l ist of scientific publications ;
A brief presentation of the research project (2 to 3 pages) indicating the plan, the
calendar and if need be, the way documents of the Foundation will be used ;
A reference letter by the thesis director .
Amount of the Scholarship
The grant is a flat -rate amount provided to help cover costs associated with stay and trip, and
has two components:
A CHF 3'00 0 monthly allowance meant to cover subsistence expenses (in Lausanne) ,
paid at the end of each month according to the rule s;
An allowance to cover expenses related to round -trip to Lausanne (economy -class air
ticket and second -class rail ticket) upon presentation of the a ppropriate supporting
documents .
Recipients’ Status, Activities and Res ponsibilities
Recipients must undertake to adhere to the scholarship status and act in compliance
with archives regulations. Serious infringement to this will likely result in the reducti on
or cancellation of the grant;
They shall be based at the Foundation in Lausanne, where th ey will mainly carry out
research during working hours;
They will take charge of issues relating to their trip and stay in Lausanne, such as legal
formalities, travel, and accommodation ;
Fellows will be provided scientific follow -up by the ir thesis direc tors. The Foundation
shall ensure availability of archives , as it is the case with other fellows;
At the end of their stay, fellows shall submit a 3 to 5 -page -research report to the
Founda tion (French or English copies);
They shall equally submit a copy of their dissertation as well as any other publication s
incorporating relevant aspects of their work;
Upon publication of their thesis, each fellow must acknowledge the Foundation’s
support ;
Each fellow must agree that his name and aspects of his research can feature in the
Foundation’s information materials including its activity reports and website .
