highly urbanized . One -third of its people live in the Toronto ,Montreal and Vancouver metropolitan
areas, and most of the rest live in other urban areas , including in Calgary , Edmonton , Quebec
City, Winnipeg ,Hamilton , and the capital, Ottawa . The British North Am erica Act of July 1, 1867
(now celebrated as Canada Day ) united the colonies of Canada , New Brunswick , and Nova
Scotia in the semi -autonomous federal Dominion of Canada , which became largely independent
with the Statute of Westminster 1931 . Bilingual in English and French at the federal level, Canada
is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large -scale
immigration from many countries . Its advanced economy is the tenth largest in the world . It ranks
among the highest in international measurements of government transparency, civil liberties,
