Jagan Sankaranarayanan
Jagan Sankaranarayanan is an Indian scientific researcher who has various contributions
to domains like Social Networking Mining, Big Data Processing, Cloud Computing or
Distributed Systems.
He graduated the R.V. College of Engineering, Computer Science section from
Bangalore in 2002. Aft er this, he attended the classes of University of Maryland Colleg e Park,
where he received a doctorate degree in Computer Science in 2008. The doctoral thesis implied
the study of spatial data structures and algorithms with effect on databases and computer
graphics [2]. He proved how shortest path, distance and complex queries on road networks can
be sped up by several orders of magnitude and how they can be implemented inside a database
system .

2008 -2010 – Assistant Research Specialist at Univers ity of Maryland
2010 -2015 – Research Staff Member at NEC Laboratories America
2015 -Present – Department Head of Data Management at NEC Laboratories
America Inc, responsible for setting the overall research strategy.
As an assistant research he was implie d in the research group which created the idea of
putting “news on a map”. The group developed the Twitter Stan d system that identifies and
aggregates Tweets. He is one of the authors of the article TwitterStand: News in Tweets in which
is presented the entire process and system. Jagan had contributions to the news reader system,
called News Stand, an application which maps n ews clusters to a set of geographical locations.
Another system developed by Jagan is STEWARD, a spatial -textual search engine for
identifying and extracting textual references to geo locations.
As received awards, the most important are [1]: NEC Excellent In vention Award -2014,
SIGMOD 2008 best paper award, Best Journal Paper of 2007 Award (Computers & Graphics
Journal) and Dean’s fellowship award for 2007 -2008.

All in all, Jagan Sankaranarayanan had various contributions to big data analytical
systems and ot her data mining techniques for big data platforms.
