A dispute between Microsoft and the U.S. government over turning over emails stored in a
data center in Ireland comes up for oral arguments in an appeals court in New York on
Wednesday.

Microsoft holds that an outcome against it could affect the trust of its cloud customers
abroad as well as affect relationships between the U.S. and other government s which have
their own data protection and privacy laws.

Customers outside the U.S. would be concerned about extra -territorial access to their user
information, the company has said. A decision against Microsoft could also establish a
norm that could allo w foreign governments to reach into computers in the U.S. of companies
over which they assert jurisdiction, to seize the private correspondence of U.S. citizens.

Back in the 1970s, "darknet" wasn't an ominous term: it simply referred to networks that
were isolated from the mainstream of ARPANET for security purposes. But as ARPANET became
the Internet and then swallowed up nearly all the other computer netwo rks out there, the
word came to identify areas that were connected to the Internet but not quite of it,
difficult to find if you didn't have a map. Naturally, unsettling content and activity
flourished in the shadows. "You can find pretty much anything you can think of in the
darknet," says Loucif Kharouni, Senior Threat Researcher at big data security firm
Damballa < https://www.damballa.com/ > .

set of SDKs and APIs that allow developers to build “intelligent” applications without
having to learn machine learning . Using Oxford’s face, speech, and vision APIs, developers
can create applications that recognize facial features, analyze images, or perform speech –
to-text or text -to-speech translations.

In an interview with InfoWorld Editor at Large Paul Krill, Microso ft’s Ryan Galgon, senior
program manager responsible for the Project Oxford platform and technologies, talked about

A new DOJ policy < http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice -department -announces -enhanced –

requires the agency to delete all data as soon as a mobile device is located through the
technology, and data must be deleted no less than once daily when DOJ investigators are
targeting a known device.

The new policy covers DOJ divisions such as the FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration.

Google this week released a set of new features
<http://googleforwork.blogspot.com/2015/09/new -season-new-ways-to-get-work-done-with-
Google-Docs.html > that merge more of the company's core strengths and other legacy
products with the Google for Work portf olio. Including the six new features announced this
week (only three of which are detailed here), the company says it made more than 100
improvements to Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and Forms since the beginning of the year.

Google Docs gets voice -to-text

Voice input in Google Docs is the most important of the new features released for
enterprise users, according to Forrester analyst David Johnson. The new speech -to-text
capability supports more than 40 languages and must be activated via Google Chrome's To ols
menu. The feature is available only in Chrome browsers and there’s no word from Google on
when other browsers might be supported.

More than half of all enterprise CIOs expect to struggle with a shortage of IT skills over
the next year, according to IDG’s 2015 State of the CIO survey
<http://www.cio.com/article/2862760/cio -role/2015 -state-of-the-cio.html > . That percentage
rises from 5 6% to 62% for larger enterprises – perhaps because those organizations are
actively pursuing emerging technologies that require more advanced skills such as cloud
computing < http://www.pcconnection.com/it -services/cloud -computing -solutions > ,
virtualizatio n, and big data analytics.

A skills gap is more than a mere annoyance to enterprises: it affects the bottom line. A
CareerBuilder survey
<http://www.careerbuilder.com/share/aboutus/pressreleasesdetail.aspx?sd=3%2F6%2F2014&id=pr
807&ed=12%2F31%2F2014 > published in March 2014 concludes that, “on average, a company
loses more than $14,000 for every job that stays vacant for three months or longer.”
